Big Sean Opens Up About Mental Health: ‘I Just Felt Lost and I Didn’t Know How I Got There’

Right around the time the clock hit 12:00 a.m. on Big Sean’s 31st birthday, the recent Icewear Vezzo collaborator shared a three-part video update looking back on a recent mental health breakthrough.

“As I’m going into another year of life, wiser, I’m definitely seeing things different than how I used to see ’em,” Sean told fans in a series of Instagram videos. “I just wanted to speak on it and share, you know, because a lot of y’all need insight just like I do and probably felt similar too.”

As you’ll recall, Sean last year called off his previously announced Unfriendly Reminder tour with Playboi Carti. Later, he revealed in an interview to Billboard that depression and anxiety had contributed to the decision to cancel the dates. In these latest Instagram updates, Sean elaborated on that period in his life and explained that he ultimately sought the assistance of a therapist.

Around this time last year, Sean said, he felt something “wasn’t all the way connecting” with his energy. “I’m big on energy and I wasn’t feeling like myself and I couldn’t figure out why,” he said. “So what I did was I stepped back from everything I was doing, everything I had going on, because somewhere in the middle of it, dawg, I just felt lost and I didn’t know how I got there.”

Though Sean has been practicing meditation since he was 17 and vouches for its anxiety and depression benefits, he realized last year that he was experiencing something that “required some special attention” too. “So what I did was I started therapy,” Sean said. “I got a good therapist, I was blessed enough to talk to some super spiritual people, and they made me realize what I was missing in my life and one thing I was missing was clarity.”

After a period of self-care, Sean said he’s now working at a “higher level” and enjoying his art again. “I realized that it all started with me and I had to analyze myself,” he said. “I couldn’t point the finger at anybody else. I had to point it at myself and nurture those relationships that were important to me, but most importantly nurture the relationship with myself.”

As for new music plans, Sean also offered this: “I’m making the best music of my life.”
