Watch Kehlani’s powerful speech on suicide and mental health

Published by Daniel Brooks Moore (some content may be aggregated) on

Kehlani’s mental health struggles have been widely documented over the last few months. After allegedly attempting to kill herself back in March, the “You Should Be Here” singer has been on the road to recovery: making new music, wiping her social media accounts, and doing a series of small shows.

It was during one of these sets on Saturday (May 14) that Kehlani took the opportunity to open up about her experiences. Admitting to the crowd that it “wasn’t the first time” she had tried to kill herself, she delivered a powerful motivational speech on mental health and suicide prevention.

“(Depression is) something that so many young people are dealing with,” the singer said. “And so many young people slip under the rug. Please don’t try it. Don’t do it.”

“If you have a friend and they’re scaring you a little, just love them. Just hug them, and love them up, and tell ’em that it’s good, okay,” she pleaded. “And from me to you, you are worth it, you are perfect, you need to be here, you are meant to be here.”
